The Huntington Beach city departments hosted a chili cookoff Tuesday to launch a campaign that will raise funds and support for their Relay for Life team called HB United.
The team's goal is to have 300 residents and 30 cancer survivors and to raise $30,000 for the American Cancer Society's signature event.
For the cookoff, members of most city departments brought chili, cornbread and other lunch-time treats to sell, with the proceeds going to the team. There was also a mock jail where city officials had to contribute to HB United in order to be released. The cookoff raised about $2,240 for the team.
Councilman Keith Bohr, Rainbow Disposal Chairman Ron Shenkman and Wave columnist Stan Cohen were the judges for the chili in the categories of best overall, most unusual ingredient and best meatless, vegetarian.
Relay for Life will be held June 21-22 at the Ocean View High School track. The event honors cancer survivors and memories of those lost to the disease. Information: www.relayforlife.org or the City Clerk's office at 714-536-5227.
